The 2017-18 North American winter lasted astronomically between December 22, 2017-March 20, 2018 and meteorologically between December 1, 2017-February 28, 2018. Due to a weak La Nina current, cooler temperatures were expected in the north while warmer temperatures were expected in the south.
November 12-16 Winter Storm[]
Between November 12-16, a winter storm affected the West and Midwest, with over 4 feet of snow deposited in the Northern Rockies. The maximum snow accumulation recorded was 52.3 inches in Red River Hot Springs, Idaho. The storm also caused significant snowfall in the Cascades and the Sierras. Lighter snow fell at lower elevations. Portland, Oregon received 2.1 inches, Seattle, Washington received 4.3 inches, and Boise, Idaho received 0.5 inches. Chicago and Milwaukee both received dustings of snow. 0.6 inch ice accumulations were also measured in Rowan, Iowa. Winter Storm Warnings were issued for the Northern Rockies and Plains.
