the 2020-2021 winter storm season was an active storm season that saw record cold and heavy snowfall across much of North America. This included an unusually early storm on september 12 that set record low temperatures in the south during the following days.

Meteorologist called for a mild winter with an average amount of winter storms for the 2020-21 season. According to predictions the season would last from late October to early March.

An unexpected artic storm complex formed over southern Canada on September 12, 2020. This complex moved south over the high plains over the next few days. Freeze warnings were issued for Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Northern Nebraska on September 13. The storm would produce sleet in most areas with some snowfall in the Minneapolis area. The complex continued south on September 14 with freeze warnings extending into Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and even into central Texas. This complex set record lows in Texas and Oklahoma for early September with sleet and ice being reported as far south as Austin, Texas on September 14. The system would produce sleet and mixed precipitation over Arkansas Louisiana and Northeast Texas on September 15, before dissipitating at 4:25 PM CDT. A 1/4 inch of snow in the Minneapolis area on September 13 was the only recorded snowfall from this system.

On September 28 a Winter Storm Complex formed over Southern Ontario dumping up to a inch of Snow in some areas. The Complex continued to move in a Southeast direction. Winter Storm warnings were issued in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Northern Illinois and Parts of Michigan for September 29. The Warnings Extended into Central and Eastern Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania on the 30th. Winter Storm warnings were issued in Upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont , New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island on October 1st and 2nd. Winter Storm warnings were also issued by enviroment Canada for Southern Ontario and Souther Qubec during the duration of the Storm. This Storm Complex consisted of mostly Sleet with most of the Snowfall occuring in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Southern Ontario. 2 Inches of Snow were recorded throughout Michigan and Southern Ontario with 1 inch recorded in Wisconsin. A half inch of Snow was recorded in Chicago. A Multi-Car Pile up occured on I-75 Northwest of Detroit due to icy road ways on September 30th. Another traffic accident occured in Buffalo on October 1st. Most of the winter storm warnings issued were also occumpanied by wind chill advisories as wind chill tempatures dropped well below 0 in some locations.
